Early mornings in the wilderness when the air is cool and the winds are non-existent is the best time to absorb it all. In the spring especially, the birds are lively, the smell of new growth is fresh, and the sun feels amazing.
When the days are quiet and still, it gets me thinking more than other days. I like to imagine stories, scenes, or possibilities. This country I have a lot of history with, it's an area I spend a lot of time in. Some times are more special than others. This was one of those mornings that inspired this piece.

There's always so much more to the light that shines on the land than its appearance. Light can drive emotion within, get me to think deeper, ignite my imagination, and further my relationship with the wild and life itself. It's a hard thing for me to describe, but at times it feels like light can speak to me.
As I stood at the place that inspired this piece in awe, something came over me in that moment and thought instantly that this was the place. This had to be something to capture in a painting.
The feeling of atmosphere shown through the faded blues on the horizon combined with the warm glow of the sunlight against the rock calms me. The power of weather rolling along low in the sky stuns me. A mule deer buck steps out into the open to lip curl as another group cut across the hillside behind. It fascinates me what else is out there in the vast openness of the landscape. To me, this is what all of Mother Nature's glory truly looks like.

"Unreal Beauty"
This painting captures two aspects of what fascinates me, color and the unknown. Ever since I can remember, I find myself thinking about what's out there. I ponder where animals are on the landscape, what they might be doing, or what species are present. Typically if you spend enough time in the woods you'll eventually see what's out there. However one exception to that always seems to be wolves.
Wolves make themselves very well known on the landscape through the sign they leave and occasionally their howls. What intrigues me about them is I don't believe there is another animal in the wilderness who has made their presence so clearly known without revealing themselves to me. Time after time I hear them, cross their tracks, see their scat, and yet never quite catch a glimpse.
We are never alone in the wild and our presence I would be willing to bet never goes unnoticed. I wonder how often I'm being watched and by whom when I'm out exploring the countryside. That curiosity is in part what drives me to create.
This painting pushes the boundaries of what is believable and captures the fascination for what I know is possible through God's creations.

"A Different Beauty"
The wilderness is unkind, unforgiving, sometimes demoralizing, but yet can find a way to reach so far into your heart and soul that you become addicted to the relationship you build with it. Many warn to not venture into these wild places alone, but I cannot help it. The mountains, the forests, or wherever it may be is where I find my true self and my understanding for what's most important.
Most times when I leave the gravel or the trailhead to venture out alone I get a pit in the bottom of my stomach. I don't know whether that's the fear of the unknown or from the excitement of what's to come, I just crave the outcome and nothing can keep me from finding out what that will be.
I would say that the emotions and thoughts I have when I'm far back in the wilderness or venturing into it come from past experiences. The moment I take that first step off-trail is when life seemingly becomes more real and suddenly I realize how small we really are. It's hard not to think about difficult moments of my past rather than the good ones. Maybe it's natural instinct kicking in to remind me to move forward with caution, but those moments I've had around fear always seem to come back to me.
When it comes to the other animals that roam the landscape, there's not many other than the grizzly bear that I'm concerned about. I've only had one incident with a bear behaving predatorial, thankfully for my case it was a black bear and I was able to diffuse the situation. However for that one brief moment as we peered into each others eyes from several feet apart, I saw life for the first time in a completely different light.
Despite all of my inner thoughts I always find myself pushing on. Perhaps the addicting appeal of the wilderness is the fact that hardship and hard work never goes unrewarded. Mother Nature will always provide for those with the desire to learn and discover.
This painting captures what I fear and at the same time what I love so dearly. Our connection with the wild is no different than with any animal that roams it; I feel it every time when I'm out. The enriching experience that the wilderness and all its beauty provides never comes without some costs. Time spent in these magnificent areas can be life changing however, and without this struggle perhaps there wouldn't be so much beauty to be discovered.

"Nothing Like It"
Our world's wetlands are one of the most fragile and precious ecosystems to exist. Wetlands are the backbone of our wildlife, and the loss of this critical habitat often slips under the radar. In the United States alone, about 85% of wetland habitat has been drained and destroyed for agriculture or development. When I first experienced the true magnificence of what a healthy wetland ecosystem is, I gained an appreciation for these places that I didn't know was possible.
When I moved further West to the Rockies, I knew I'd miss not being able to experience the abundance of wetlands that the upper Midwest harbors. To my surprise however, I discovered just how rich the Western landscape was of these marshlands. In fact through all the exploring I did in the years to follow, I found these Western wetlands to be even more inspiring. I found that many of these places were sometimes even less disturbed than some of the premier places back East, examples of true hidden gems.
I'll never forget stumbling across what I now consider my favorite place to experience the marsh and observe the wildlife that inhabits it. With miles and miles of potholes, creeks, marshes, lakes and stunning backdrops, this area captures everything I love about the wild. During the spring the sounds of amphibians, insects and birds are so abundant that it creates a constant hum in the air which seems almost deafening. Add to all of that the sounds of wing beats in the air, the subtle sounds of the water, the surrounding views of the mountains and this place truly becomes a model of perfection in the eyes of Mother Nature.
These places of sheer beauty exist throughout all waterfowl migratory paths. To witness these birds in such abundance while in such a beautiful place is an extraordinary sight to behold and there really is nothing else like it.

Based off of a local mountain range near I live, this painting captures what I often dream about. Through thousands of miles of hiking over this past year, I often have daydreamed of the perfect scene inspired by what's around me.
When I first laid my eyes upon this mountain horizon at sunrise, I knew I had to paint it. I imagined a perfect place with a backdrop like the one I saw that morning. Through trial and error, I developed a composition that brought peace and joy to my heart. With the addition of the elk, I could envision a spot that became a perfect portrayal of my dreams and what I love most about the mountains. Inspired by Saint Mary Lake in Glacier National Park, this new oil painting of mine is an attempt to express my passion and love for wildlife and the outdoors. "Beneath The Glory"
This landscape painting in oils is the fifth painting of my series of work capturing what I love most about the outdoors and is an attempt to capture the magnificent beauty of the Southwestern United States. This painting began on location with a plein air study. We spent a couple of days in a canyon just like this and for the longest time I've wanted to capture all the things that made this place special to me, but I couldn't figure out how. Recently while revisiting some of the photos I took along with the paintings I brought back from the area, I found my inspiration and it all came together.
I titled this painting "Beneath The Glory" because in the land of canyons, the towering landscapes around you can make oneself feel so small. The sheer glory of the rocks tower above these deep canyons, where water, wildlife, and nature thrives.

"An Amazing Journey"
This oil painting portrays a moment in the long winter journey that many of the mountain dwelling elk face each year. Survival dictates the direction of almost everything this time of year for these hearty animals. What fascinates me the most is the way they interact with each other along this adventure and how that differs from region to region.
In this scene I imagine a bull elk stepping out into the wide open while letting out a lonesome call alerting other elk in the area as they call back. The migration as a whole is on. The journey for these elk and their survival through winter has just begun. The obstacles and stories that lie ahead in these animal's path is what fascinates me and what gets me excited to create and share.

This scene overall means a lot more to me than what's just on the surface. It has so many levels that I can connect with and personally, it's almost as if it brings two chapters of my life together into one: the Great Plains where I once lived and the mountains where I live now and what's special to me are the similarities and aspects that each of these regions share together. In a sense, it captures everything that I've personally held close and near to my heart for the better half of my adult life.
I just love the dead of winter and the stillness that comes with it. It can be such a peaceful time to get out into the wild. For me it just provides an intimacy with nature that is on a completely different level. Then with the addition of the bison, an extraordinary example of how amazing mother nature is, this piece really brings it all together for me.
This painting, which is the third painting in my series this year, gives me a lot of inspiration and I hope that it can do the same for you as well. Life can be so tough in the northern Great Plains as well as places like Yellowstone, but at the same time offer such beauty. I wanted this painting to capture just that and exhibit the relationship between the two and the animals that roam the land.

Autumn will always be a time of year I hold closest to my heart. The cool fresh air, the ripe smells, the sound of blowing leaves, and of course the approaching holidays. As a very young boy in the late 80's and early 90's, I recall faint memories of those old Mom and Pop stores along the countryside. Most were beginning to age as they neared their last years of a long and happy business. It was the spot for a little food, gas, and all sorts of goodies. Those old places seemed to have vanished with the times, but those memories I have when we would stop in for some ice cream while we gassed up the boat will last forever. I'm taken to an imaginary place in this painting that was fueled by those very memories and inspiration. A family stops in for a little treat and some fall decorations in this piece I titled "The Harvest Moon."

I had found this barn while out exploring the countryside earlier in the year which began as the foundation for this painting. Later on, I had discovered another ranch with a creek flowing through the yard which inspired the foreground. I wanted this painting to depict the peacefulness and beauty of the valleys near where I live.
I never knew how much waterfowl Western Montana had, particularly Mallards. They fill the ponds and rivers by the thousands each fall and winter. The lowland farms and ranches attract a number of them to their pastures and yards. Recently they've been taking flight again after rearing their broods and molting. It inspired me to make them the focus of this piece.

Big mountains, deep canyons, rugged terrain, and wildlife is why I love so much of the West. No matter the weather or the time of year, I'm happiest when I can get out to explore. However winter is a season which I haven't portrayed as much in my work compared to others. So when the snow came around this year, I made a commitment to get out more and create something that expressed my passion for this chilly time of year.
It wasn't until we stumbled across a herd of bighorn sheep that I got inspired to paint. Our first encounter was during one of the coldest week's of the year, -26F was the temp that day. We caught a glimpse of them from the vehicle and decided to return on a warmer day.
Fast forward a couple weeks later and the sun was out, the snow was disappearing, and the animals were up and moving. We were able to relocate the sheep, get in close, and gather a lot of reference. I knew immediately that this was what I had to depict.
Over the course of a few more trips into the mountains, I began to develop the scene on paper that lived within my dreams. Waiting for spring to arrive, these three rams stand together overlooking the magnificent snow covered landscape. A scene that in my eyes, captures a small piece of the beauty that is the West.

Ever since I was 6 years old my Dad would take me canoeing into what's called Quetico Provincial Park, just North of Minnesota. It's more than 1800 square miles of non-motorized, canoe-only accessible waters and dense forest in Ontario, Canada. This is really where my love for our wilderness areas first began to develop. Fast forward 12 years and I found myself working on the Gunflint Trail along the MN Boundary Waters. As a result my love has grown over the years for these wild and vastly connected waterways that cover so much of those regions.
This scene brings me back to so many great memories. No wind, the warmth of the summer air, and the fresh smell of lake water. I can almost hear the loons calling out.

Exploring the high deserts of Utah was something I'll never forget and surely be doing again in the future. We saw so many beautiful landscapes and areas while we were there. The one thing in particular that was a constant throughout however, was the unpredictable weather.
It didn't matter where we went, the small, yet powerful storms seemed to roll by all day every day, and I was totally captivated. It got me thinking about the role that weather plays in our environment and the tremendous impact it's had on that area. Water has basically shaped everything at some point in time and virtually nothing has escaped that. One by one the storms roll by, gradually contributing to the ever-changing landscape.

Summer in the mountains is something else. I love exploring the creek bottoms for wildlife on those sunny July days. The cool mountain air, the intensely warm sun rays, and the sound of air rushing through the distant forests... I can't help but smile just thinking about it. The perfect view, the perfect weather, and my favorite time of the year. This brings me to a place that could only be described in my mind as the perfect spot. It brings me back to childhood memories at our old family lake cabin in Wisconsin growing up. How do I know that I'll like my painting once it arrives without seeing it in person prior to purchasing?
I strive to take the highest quality photos of my artwork to display on the product pages. Most images of the art itself are professional imaged and color corrected to the original artwork by professionals. I photograph my framed art and wall photos with a DSLR camera and professional quality lighting. If for some reason you are unhappy with the painting once you receive it then you may return it to the address provided and I will refund your money granted the art is returned in good condition. Insurance is the responsibility of the customer for return postage.
