"Memories With Dad"

Growing up in Minnesota was certainly a blessing for me. We had access to the woods, fields, and water which was the best part of all. I've been playing by the lakeside or been out floating on a boat ever since I was a toddler. The water was my absolute favorite place to be when I was a kid. When I was 6 years old my Father began taking me up the Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota along the Boundary Waters. We would get dropped off by boat at the Canadian border and then canoe into Quetico Provincial Park for a week. This became a trip that we would do twice a summer by the time I was 10 or 12. Words can't even begin to describe what this was like for me as a kid that age. These were the most memorable times of my life.

These trips meant so much to me that I still have vivid memories of every single time we went up there. I can still remember when I was 6 years old on my first trip. I'll never forget sitting in the tent during the pouring rain with my Dad holding a frozen juice box on the palm of my hand. I had tripped and planted my hand directly in the pan of boiling oil during our nightly fish fry and endured the worst burn of my life still to this date. Despite the set back, 12 hours later we had my hand wrapped up like a mummy as we fished our favorite "narrows" for big walleye. I learned to take the bad with the good while out in nature on these trips. This was a lesson which carved the foundation for who I am as a person. I look back and reflect often on these experiences as they truly were the best ones of my life.

I could tell stories for days about the experiences we had while exploring that remote wilderness. Nothing quite beats drifting along the calm shorelines of those remote waters in a Kevlar canoe. Every time you turn a corner you never know what you might see. There could be a loon, an otter, a bald eagle, a bear, or even a giant bull moose if your lucky. When I began this painting I wanted to bring those experiences to life. As it began to come together I fell in love with it and it became so real for me. It's just how I remembered it. I can almost smell the campfire smoke lingering in the calm evening air.
