My time spent living in the North Dakota badlands had a strong impact on my life. Before arriving for the first time, I had absolutely no clue that this place was so beautiful and inspiring. Being able to live and work among the bison herds was particularly a special treat for me. When the sun began to set the skies were always more colorful and more brilliant than I had experienced elsewhere. I wanted to capture that experience in a painting in such a way that could not be captured with a camera or even the naked eye. I guess the old saying is true. As long as the sun sets the West will always be wild.
