Top 5 Cameras for Artists and Painters: A Guide To High-Quality Reference Photos

If you're an artist then you know how important it is to have quality reference material. Painting from your own reference photos can be especially meaningful because it injects more feeling and emotion into your work. If you're on the search for a camera to take reference photos, there are a few things to keep in mind: high image resolution, accurate color reproduction, and ease of use. You should also keep camera size in mind, because as an artist, you might not always be carrying (or willing to carry) a bulky DSLR. Inspiration can strike anywhere, so you want to be ready.

Top 5 Portable Cameras for High-Quality Reference Photos: A Guide for Artists and Painters

So, let's go over my top 5 list of cameras for artists looking to take their own photos for reference. These cameras are what I would recommend for artists who need reference and not necessarily professional-level photos. Great reference material doesn't need to be perfect, but rather adequate enough to draw or paint from. That being said, these cameras produce excellent photographs on a reasonable budget.

1. Sony RX100 VII

This Sony is a compact, long zoom camera that is the perfect camera for taking high-quality reference photos. It has a 20.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 24-200mm zoom lens, allowing you to capture smooth, detailed images even from a distance. It also features fast autofocus and real-time tracking, which allows you to capture moving objects. This camera also has a flip-up LCD touchscreen and a built-in electronic viewfinder, which helps you compose your shots even in bright sunlight. It does have a small maximum aperture that limits the camera's use in dim light, but for art reference, this thing is a beast!

This camera is ideal for anyone looking for a versatile zoom range in a compact sized camera with a reliable focus

2. Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III

The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is another excellent camera for capturing high quality reference photos. It features a 20.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 24-100mm zoom lens, which allows you to capture detailed images from a variety of angles. It's a well priced camera that offers very good image quality, a fast lens, and good ergonomics. This camera also has a fast autofocus system and a 30fps burst mode, which makes it easier to capture fast-moving objects. Additionally, the camera has a flip-up LCD touchscreen that allows you to work from high or low angles.

This camera is perfect for those seeking a pocket sized camera with a versatile lens that performs better in low light than other compact cameras.

3. Panasonic Lumix LX100 II

The Panasonic Lumix LX100 II is a shoot camera that is perfect for artists and enthusiasts who want a small camera with higher-quality photo and video. It features a 17-megapixel in a 4:3 aspect ratio. This means the finest details can be precisely captured with the increased resolution and new sensor. The camera also offers 4K video and a near DSLR-like photo experience with traditional lens-mounted and body-mounted exposure controls. A precision Leica lens 24-75mm zoom lens allows you to capture detailed images even in low light. The lens also has a power optical image stabilizer that effectively compensates for hand shake and it has a fast autofocus system and a variety of manual controls, which make it easy to adjust your settings for different shooting situations. Additionally, it has a built-in electronic viewfinder, which helps you compose your shots even in bright sunlight. This camera is a great option for landscape and portrait photographers looking to up their game.

4. Canon EOS R

If you're wanting to invest in something really quality and don't mind the size, the Canon EOS R is a mirrorless DSLR camera is an excellent option. Even though it's larger than a point and shoot camera, the EOS R is relatively compact and lightweight in comparison to other DSLRs so you can take it anywhere you want to go. It has a full frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC 8 image processor that ensures crisp and high resolution photos and videos. It features a 30.3 megapixel image processor and high speed continuous shooting that can capture the dynamic movements of athletes, animals, and other moving subjects. Additionally, it has a built in electronic view finder and swivel LCD touch screen so you can work from high or low angles and a selectable shutter silence mode when shooting in silence is necessary. One final feature is that the body is dust and water sealed which is one less thing to have to worry about when you're photographing outdoors. The R comes with a new line of RF-mount lenses so if you are already a Canon user have no fear, there is an EF-EOS R adapter for EF lenses you may already own. I use this camera all the time when I have room for it in my bag or don't mind the extra weight, and I have to say, it's by far the best all around camera I've used for taking reference photos. The only downside is the higher cost compared to others, which is why it's at number 4.

5. Samsung S22 Plus

I know what you're thinking, a cell phone? Well in this day in age, the camera in your pocket might be one of the best options for on the go and that's why the final recommendation on this list is the S22. The Samsung S22 Plus is a powerful smartphone with an advanced camera system that can produce high-quality reference photos. It features a triple camera setup with a 64-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor, which allows you to capture detailed images from a variety of angles.

In addition to its impressive camera capabilities, the Samsung S22 Plus is also a great option for artists because of the convenience it offers. In today's age, cell phone cameras have become more advanced and can produce high-quality images that rival those of traditional cameras. The Samsung S22 Plus, in particular, has advanced features like pro mode, which allows you to manually adjust settings like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to get the perfect shot. You can capture photos in RAW format, which means you can capture more detail and greater dynamic range from the camera.

Honestly, this is becoming my most utilized camera I own. I absolutely love it and many of my paintings are now born through this phone. I promise you, especially if you know how to edit your photos, you'll barely remember that your working from cell phone pics.
