Art inspired by the Northwoods

This week I began thinking about Western landscapes and my inspiration from the big pine trees of the Northwoods. I'm on a quest to find the ultimate ways to capture mountain life, country living, Western living.. And I thought this would be an interesting idea to explore. This is how it came out.

So the end result was something I was very happy with. My whole life I've loved to explore Northern Minnesota and living out West now reminds me of the large pines and clean water. I began this with the idea that there were going to be pines and there was going to be a cabin. I didn't know what this was going to turn into until about an hour into this painting. I had a flash of inspiration and just ran with it.

I knew I wanted to incorporate brilliant lighting into this, but did not know how I was going to do that. The lightning was something I thought I could use as well as the sun reflecting off the clouds. Once I was able to put all of this together I came up with my perfect place. A peaceful point overlooking a large lake lost in a sea of pine forest. Only the crack of the lightning breaks the peace and quiet. Waterfowl pile in to find shelter from the approaching storm, and perhaps while someone sits cozy inside the cabin.

I have a new painting I've been working on. This first photo shows the beginning of this one when I was just laying out my ideas.

I'm not sure where I was going with this particular idea. It's very hard to explain, but I think I'll just go ahead and show you what it is becoming in this next photo.

Wow! I know I really surprised myself with where this has gone. The cool part is I'm filming this whole painting as usual and I think it is going to make for a great time-lapse. So stay tuned and be sure to follow me on facebook if you haven't already!
